Other Oral History Sites
Oral History is a method of collecting and preserving spoken memories and personal comments of historical information through recorded interviews with participants in past events and ways of life. In a sense, its rise can attribute to the technology development. Especially is the emergence of Internet. People can communicate and get information by the Internet. I am a beginner of oral history. In fact, I also know the oral history in the Internet. Now I have contacted with some oral historians and many oral history associations in the world. So I feel it is important to summarize the oral history resources on the World Wide Web.

International Oral History Association was established under the endeavor
of some oral historians in 1979. It is an international organization of oral
history field. The official publication is International Oral History Yearbook.
It will convoke the International Oral History Conference in two years. The
11th conference will convoke in the Turk on June, 2000. This site introduces

of publication, nonprint media productions, teaching, and oral history projects.

their e-mail address. So you can consult with them, they will give you some

The Columbia University Oral History Research Office is the oldest and largest
organized oral history program in the world.It was founded by historian Allan
Nevins in 1948. This site consist of contact information, background, scope,

institute. Summer institute is the highest seminar in the oral history field.

Natioanl Library of New Zealand is one of the country's leading cultural
and information centres. The unique role of the National Library is to collect
and maintain literature and information resources that relate to New Zealand
and the Pacific. The Oral Histiry Centre captures the voices of ordinary New
Zealanders through interview. It preserves more than 9,000 hours of spoken recording
on discs, reels and cassette tape. The Centre not only does oral history projects,
but also provides training and advice on how to record oral histories, and hires
out equipment for people making oral histories. New Zealand has established
an organization---New Zeland Oral History Association to direct the development
of oral history.

on the history of Singapore through the collective memory of the people. The

The British Library National Sound Archive (NSA) is one of the largest sound
archives in the world. The NSA¡¯s oral history section collects audio and video
taped interviews as well as carrying out its own programme of life story recordings.
As the national centre for oral history in Britain, the section provides advice
and training in oral history methods and theory, and maintains close contact
with oral history groups in Britain and abroad. It has done some wellknown projects:

The Office of Smithsonian Institution Archives began its Oral History Program
in 1973. Program staff conduct interviews with current and retired Smithsonian
staff and others who have made significant contributions to the Institution.
The purpose of the program is to supplement the written documentation of the
Archives records and manuscript collections, focusing on the history of the
Institution, research by its scholars, and contributions of its staff. The Oral
History Collection also contains interviews conducted by researchers or students
on topics related to the history of the Smithsonian or the holdings of the Smithsonian

historian of the West for whom the library is named, Hubert Howe Bancroft. The
Regional Oral History Office was established in 1954 to continue the Bancroft

Oral History at CSULB is an instructional program offering students an enhanced
knowledge of the techniques and methodologies of oral information gathering
and its uses in teaching and research. It also serves as an oral history resource
for educational and community groups to help them promote and use oral history
in both teaching and researching. But oral history is not a degree granting

The University of Florida's Oral History Program is funded by and associated
with the Department of History and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
at the University of Florida. The Program also receives support from the College
of Medicine, College of Law, and the UF Foundation. The Program's Director is
a member of the National Oral History Association. This program major collection
has over 900 interviews with Native Americans--including Seminoles, Cherokees,
and Creeks. Other holdings include such diverse subjects as African-Americans

The Indiana University Oral History Research Center is devoted to the collection,
preservation, and interpretation of memories and oral traditions. The center
takes a special interest in American history in general and the history of Indiana
and the Midwest in particular. It seeks to preserve historical data that usually
cannot be found in any written form and exists mainly in the memories of historical
participants themselves. Since 1968, the center has collected over 1,600 recorded
interviews on topics ranging from the history of Indiana communities to the

SOHA was founded in 1981 to serve practitioners of oral history in Arizona,

Texas Oral History Association was founded in 1982, serves as a network for
oral history workers from various settings throughout Texas, other states and
all countries. The web site provides announcements of forthcoming TOHA meetings,

In addition it includes a cumulative list of the contents of the TOHA journal,
Sound Historian, published since 1993, and provides manuscript requirements

This was the idea that originated the Museum of the Person, a private institution
created in Brazil in 1992, that has as an aim to register, to preserve and to
divulge life stories. The Museum of the Person is a virtual Museum. Here you

It documents the state's political heritage through oral history interviews
and collections of associated papers. The GGDP collection includes more than
250 interviews with former governors, legislators, women in politics, African
American political activists and leaders, journalists, and numerous other public
figures. In addition to the interviews generated by the project, the GGDP actively
collects interviews conducted by other scholars of Georgia politics. The Project
Director is Clifford M. Kuhn. Mr Clifford is also a famous oral historian. He
teacher oral history in GSU, so he has some achievement in the oral history
teaching. He has ever published many articles on oral history in the classroom.
His research is very significative, because oral history is very useful to alter
the mode of history teaching.

The Oral History Department collects and produces video and audiotaped testimonies
of Holocaust survivors, resources, liberators, resistence fighters, prosecutors,
perpetrators, and bystanders. The oral History Archive contains more than 2,900
interviews, mostly in English. Some 300 of the videotaped interviews are
of Polish Cathlics, Roma and Sinti, Political prisoners, homesexuals, resistence
fighters, rescuers, liberators, and postwar prosecutors of Nazis crimes. The
Oral History collection is expanding rapidly. Collection agreements are pending
or being negotiated with almost every relevant institution in the U.S., and
agreements with collections in Canada, Germany, France, Russia, Ukraine, Poland,
South America, and Australia are now being established.
